30 years ago, my husband Zvi stood at Ben Gurion airport to receive the bodies of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered by Palestinian terrorists at the Olympic Games in Munich. The murderers, members of the Black September Brigade, under the instruction of Yasser Arafat, had broken not only the Olympic code but all codes of civilised society.
Today, as pole-vaulter Alex Averbukh stood proudly on the winners podium, gold medal hanging at his neck, the Israeli flag draped around his shoulders, Hatikva resounding from the loudspeakers, and tears running down his face, revenge, the sweet revenge of success, was his.
At the Munich Olympic Stadium, the Israeli European Pole-vaulting Champion, flanked by German athletes in second and third place, showed the world that we not only survive, we win.
