The great lyricist E Y 'Yip' Harburg wrote my favourite musical, 'Flahooley' about a laughing doll given away for free by a successful industrialist who is then accused of being an anti-capitalist. It was written in 1951 during the McCarthy era in the USA and has great relevance now in the era of post-meltdown austerity. This article in two parts profiles his son Ernie, who is perpetuating his father's legacy with the Harburg Foundation. Carol Gould
